“Saudi Arabia has also reportedly been angered by its ally — and permanent UNSC member — the United States’ choice to not attack Syria for allegedly using chemical weapons in August and for its recent signs of rapproachment with its arch-rival Iran.”

You’re the 7th largest spender on military equipment in the world, Saudi Arabia. You have plenty of funds to start World War 3 yourself, if you like.

So, like the Whackos here, KSA doesn’t approve of the UN. Is that right?

This decision was not taken in isolation, or lightly. Such an abrupt reversal implies a power struggle within the regime and/or a fundamental change in policy.

I’m guessing we will see more “uncharacteristic” behavior by the Saudis, but it will be a while before their new direction (if that is indeed the case) becomes clear.

Here is another indicator:

Upset at President Barack Obama’s policies on Iran and Syria, members of Saudi Arabia’s ruling family are threatening a rift with the United States that could take the alliance between Washington and the kingdom to its lowest point in years.

Saudi Arabia’s intelligence chief is vowing that the kingdom will make a ‘major shift’ in relations with the United States to protest perceived American inaction over Syria’s civil war as well as recent U.S. overtures to Iran, a source close to Saudi policy said on Tuesday.

Prince Bandar bin Sultan told European diplomats that the United States had failed to act effectively against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was growing closer to Tehran, and had failed to back Saudi support for Bahrain when it crushed an anti-government revolt in 2011, the source said.

The headline on this piece is flat wrong (the Saudis did not “sever diplomatic ties”), so the article should be treated with skepticism. However, the alarmist hyperbole doesn’t mean all is well.
